Nyepi 2027 — the Balinese Hindu New Year and famous Day of Silence — falls on Tuesday, March 9, 2027. Watch the days tick down on our live Nyepi countdown.
What is Nyepi?
Nyepi marks the new year on Bali's Saka lunar calendar. For a full 24 hours, from 6am to 6am the next morning, the entire island falls silent for reflection and spiritual cleansing. It is unlike any other new year celebration on Earth: instead of fireworks and parties, Bali chooses complete stillness.
The four prohibitions
The day is governed by the Catur Brata Penyepian, four rules observed by the whole island:
- Amati Geni — no fire, light or electricity.
- Amati Karya — no work.
- Amati Lelungaan — no travel or going out.
- Amati Lelanguan — no entertainment or indulgence.
Bali is so committed to the silence that Ngurah Rai International Airport closes for the full 24 hours — the only airport in the world to shut for a religious holiday.
The ogoh-ogoh parade
The night before Nyepi is the opposite of silent. Villages parade towering ogoh-ogoh — monstrous bamboo-and-papier-mâché effigies representing evil spirits — through the streets before burning them to drive negativity out of the community ahead of the new year.
When is Nyepi each year?
Because it follows the Balinese lunar calendar, Nyepi shifts each year and usually falls in March. After 2027 (March 9), upcoming dates include March 26, 2028 and March 15, 2029. The exact day can vary by a day between sources, so our countdown tracks the confirmed date.
