Seollal — the Korean Lunar New Year and one of Korea's two biggest holidays — falls on Sunday, February 7, 2027, with the public holiday running February 6–8. It opens the Year of the Sheep (Goat). Watch the time tick down on our live Seollal countdown.
When is Seollal 2027?
Seollal follows the lunisolar calendar, landing on the first day of the lunar year — the second new moon after the winter solstice. That puts it on February 7 in 2027, January 27 in 2028 and February 13 in 2029. Like Chinese New Year and Vietnamese Tết, the Gregorian date shifts each year, usually between late January and mid-February.
How Seollal is celebrated
- Charye — a morning memorial rite with food carefully arranged for ancestors.
- Sebae — younger family members make a deep bow to elders and receive blessings and sebaetdon (lucky money).
- Tteokguk — a sliced rice-cake soup; finishing a bowl is said to add a year to your age in the traditional Korean count.
- Hanbok — the colourful traditional dress worn for the day.
- Yutnori — a lively folk board game played with wooden sticks.
Seollal and Chuseok
Seollal and the autumn harvest festival Chuseok are Korea's two great family holidays, both centred on reunion and honouring ancestors. Two weeks after Seollal comes Daeboreum, the first full moon festival of the year, with bonfires and wishes for a good harvest.
