About Guru Nanak Jayanti (Gurpurab)

Guru Nanak Jayanti, widely called Gurpurab, celebrates the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak, the first of the ten Sikh Gurus and the founder of Sikhism. Born in 1469 in Rai Bhoi Ki Talwandi, now Nankana Sahib in Pakistan, he taught the oneness of God, equality of all people, honest living and selfless service. It is one of the most sacred days in the Sikh calendar and is observed with great devotion by Sikhs around the world.

Celebrations often begin two days earlier with an Akhand Path, a continuous forty-eight-hour reading of the Guru Granth Sahib, followed by a Nagar Kirtan, a procession led by the Panj Pyare with devotional singing. On the day itself, gurdwaras hold prayers and hymn-singing from early morning, and a langar, the free community kitchen, serves meals to all visitors regardless of background. Homes and gurdwaras are lit up, and many cities see large, joyful gatherings.

Guru Nanak Jayanti follows the lunar calendar and is celebrated on the full-moon day of the month of Kartik, so its Gregorian date changes each year, usually falling in November.
