About International Day of Yoga

The International Day of Yoga is a United Nations observance held every year on June 21 to raise global awareness of the physical, mental and spiritual benefits of yoga, an ancient practice that originated in India. The idea was proposed by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his address to the UN General Assembly in September 2014, and on December 11, 2014 the UN proclaimed the day by resolution, co-sponsored by a record 175 member states.

June 21 was chosen because it is the summer solstice, the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and a date of special significance in many cultures. The first International Day of Yoga in 2015 saw tens of thousands of people perform yoga together in New Delhi, setting world records, and the day is now marked by mass open-air sessions in parks, plazas and landmarks from city squares to UN headquarters. Each year the UN sets a theme highlighting yoga's role in health and well-being.
