What does August 17 commemorate?
On the morning of August 17, 1945, Sukarno — alongside Mohammad Hatta — read the Proclamation of Independence in Jakarta, declaring Indonesia free after centuries of Dutch colonial rule. The date has been the nation's most important national holiday ever since, observed across the world's largest archipelago of more than 17,000 islands.
How Hari Kemerdekaan is celebrated
The centrepiece is the national Flag Hoisting Ceremony (Upacara Pengibaran Bendera) at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta, led by the president, which re-enacts the original proclamation. Streets, homes and offices are draped in red and white, the colours of the national flag.
Panjat pinang and neighbourhood games
Across the country, communities hold high-spirited traditional games. The most famous is panjat pinang, where teams climb a tall, greased areca-palm pole to reach prizes at the top — a playful symbol of teamwork and gotong royong (mutual cooperation). Others include sack races (balap karung), cracker-eating contests (makan kerupuk) and tug-of-war (tarik tambang).
