When is Vietnamese Women's Day?
It is a fixed date — October 20 — so it never moves. In Vietnam, 20/10 is one of the most affectionate days of the year, when men and children give flowers, cards and gifts to the women they care about, and offices, schools and families hold gatherings to celebrate.
The history behind 20/10
The date marks the founding on October 20, 1930 of the Vietnam Women's Anti-Imperialist League — the forerunner of today's Vietnam Women's Union — the first organisation to give women a legal, open role in national life. The Communist Party later chose October 20 as the annual day to honour the contribution of Vietnamese women, blending political history with a warm modern celebration.
Does Vietnam celebrate Women's Day twice?
Yes — and that is part of what makes it special. Vietnam marks International Women's Day on March 8 and its own Vietnamese Women's Day on October 20, so women are honoured twice each year. Roses are the classic gift on both days, and florists and restaurants see some of their busiest dates of the year.
