About Three Kings Day (Día de Reyes)

Three Kings Day — Día de Reyes, or the Feast of the Epiphany — falls on January 6 and is one of the most cherished holidays in Spain, Latin America and the Caribbean. It commemorates the journey of the three Magi, Melchior, Caspar and Balthazar, who followed a star to Bethlehem to present the infant Jesus with gold, frankincense and myrrh. For many families it, rather than Christmas, is the great day of gift-giving.

On the eve of January 6, children leave out their shoes — and often grass or water for the Kings' camels — in hope of presents from Los Reyes Magos. Towns stage colourful Cabalgata parades in which the Kings ride through the streets tossing sweets to the crowd. The shared centrepiece is the Rosca de Reyes, a ring-shaped sweet bread hiding a tiny figurine; whoever finds it hosts the next celebration on Candlemas.

Día de Reyes always falls on January 6, twelve days after Christmas, closing the festive season. The countdown above points to the next one automatically — add Three Kings Day to your own countdown page and count down to the morning the Wise Men arrive.
