Panagbenga is Baguio City's flower festival, a month of events that opens on February 1 and closes in early March. The name is Kankanaey for "the season of blooming", and the festival was created in 1996 to lift the mountain city after the devastating 1990 Luzon earthquake — a way of showing that Baguio was standing again, and blooming. The two set pieces come at the end. The Grand Street Dancing Parade fills the roads with dancers in flower-inspired costume, and the Grand Float Parade sends enormous floats, every surface covered in fresh blooms, down Session Road. Afterwards the road closes to traffic for Session Road in Bloom, an open-air market of food stalls, crafts and flowers that runs for days.
